Population of Vanguardia

The island nation is home to 8.78 million inhabitants today. Vanguardia, with 108 inhabitants per square kilometer, has an average population density by European standards. The metropolitan areas of Camp de Sault (3.2 million inhabitants) and the province of Fleurhagues (1.3 million inhabitants) are home to 51% of the country's citizens. The entire interior of Argoth is therefore significantly less densely populated compared to the coastal region of Armor.

Population distribution

The proportion of the urban population in the total population is currently around 60%, almost in line with the European average of 72%. In addition to the 8.78 million inhabitants of the Vanguard Islands, there are approximately 1.1 million mainland Vanguardians in Europe and about 650,000 in the Americas, South Africa, and a few tens of thousands in Asia and Oceania.

Vanguardia's population is growing by 1.57% annually, with a birth surplus of 0.53% and a positive net migration of 1.05%. This trend has remained constant for a decade, which is partly due to the absurdly strict citizenship test , which not everyone passes easily.

According to the 2018 census, the age structure was as follows: 0-17 years: 27%, 18-64 years: 62%, over 65 years: 11%. The average age was therefore a healthy 33.1 years. There is a slight female majority in the population of 50.9%, which is quite positive.

In 2002, the average life expectancy for men was 77 years, and for women, 83 years. It is noteworthy that Vanguardian men, at an average height of 1.83 meters, and women, at 1.69 meters, are on average the tallest people in the world. Scientists attribute this to genetic Norman influences and the consistently upright posture they maintained against headwinds.

Approximately 9.8% of the total population of Vanguardia does not hold a Vanguardian passport. This places the Grand Mastership of Vanguardia slightly above the EU average and behind Germany (11.8%) and ahead of Spain and Great Britain (9.6%). (Source: Statista 2018). The migration balance has recently been slightly negative. In 2019, 45,500 people immigrated and 49,078 emigrated, resulting in a net migration of 3,578 people.

Internal migration within the European Union is slightly negative. This means that 249,200 Vanguardians live and work in another EU country and happily maintain their Vanguardian identity. They are therefore entitled to vote and receive pensions and participate in social services such as care work, nature conservation, or military service in Vanguardia. As expected, the largest exchange occurs within Europe. The approximately 30,000 genuine immigrants from Europe are either labor migrants or come to Vanguardia for family reunification. The increase in emigration from Vanguardia to Europe over the last 10 years can be explained by regulations concerning young club-goers who missed Sunday church services. Regarding the migration balance with other continents, it is evident that most arrivals between 2016 and 2018 came from Turkey and Syria in the wake of the Syrian war, via free admission and the asylum process. Most of the approximately 6,000 Africans arriving annually can be attributed to the liberalization of the labor market for citizens of the former colony of Liberia since 2016. These immigrants are now often employed at sea for Vanguardien's shipping companies on ships flying the Liberian flag or in fish canning factories on the southern coast.

The centuries-old emigration of Vanguardians to America, and especially to the USA, unsurprisingly reversed in 2017, so that now several thousand Americans per year want to become citizens of Vanguardia, which is not easy for them given the immigration test .
