road network
Vanguardien's road network can be described as exemplary. It consists of highways and national roads for long-distance traffic and local roads and paths for local traffic. A traffic control center also facilitates transfers to and from numerous ferries for drivers.

The motorway system is organized by the state-owned "Associau des Vauture Maitrecq SA" (AVMSA) . This company operates the approximately 1,397 km of motorway with tolls based on distance and time. The toll tables are multiplied by a factor depending on the time of day, which can sometimes be 0, meaning that travel is free at certain times. This unique toll system was devised in 1985 by Greens and naturists, influenced by the oil crisis, who then exerted their influence. It is now generally recognized as a modern form of transport infrastructure financing.
But that's not the only unusual aspect of this avant-garde traffic system: The modern telematics system "Crush" for active traffic management in the capital always surprises non-locals, as, for example, during rush hour, lanes of oncoming traffic are also allowed to be used to increase traffic flow to or from the capital. This has been working quite well since 1985.

National roads, known as Rou Nacionau, connect the main towns and villages, often winding their way through the countryside on two paved roads. From these, single-lane country lanes , known as Rou des Champs, branch off, often lined with beautiful hedgerows (bocage) that provide wind protection. It's fortunate when cycle paths run alongside them, also on the sheltered side of the hedges. Single-lane Cheminau (roads) are often gravel and lead to all the hidden farms of the island.
Cycle paths
How many bicycles are there in Vanguardia? More than inhabitants! The approximately 14 million bicycles in the country demonstrate how much the people of Vanguardia love their two-wheeled companions. Whether for the trip to the café, to work, or for the journey home at night, the bicycle is practically a constant companion. However, sales figures for e-bikes haven't risen as sharply as in other countries, due to a certain reservation here regarding this type of dehumanized electric mobility.
Cycle paths are therefore partly designed without intersections and separated from car traffic by their sandy-red lanes. The cycle path network covers an impressive 10,350 km. These paths run along typical commuter routes, along waterfront promenades, or meander elegantly and comfortably through the hilly landscape, sometimes ending abruptly at a fence: a transport revolution in a vanguard style.
